‘World Ocean Day is an international day that was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development and Ocean Institute of Canada. This international day is observed to raise global awareness about the importance of the ocean in
our lives.
In keeping with this year’s theme “Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean”, the Department of Geology, Saraswathi College of Arts and Science, Vilappil, celebrated ‘World Ocean Day with a seminar on the topic
“Vulnerability of Oceans and Climate Change”.
Dr. Ruchi Kalra, CEO, and founder of Hatch Marine Consultants, the leading provider of innovative solutions in water engineering and sustainable infrastructural projects, was the keynote speaker of the event. A Ph.D. An alumnus of IIT Delhi and a post-doc from IIT Bombay, Dr. Kalra with her innovative presentation helped the students visualize the Vulnerability of Oceans by presenting before them the simulations of major environmental catastrophes which took place on the Indian shores. She further demonstrated the long-time impact of climate change on our oceans. In her concluding remarks, she reiterated the need for conserving our oceans.
The Q & A Session that followed provided an opportunity for the students to interact with the speaker.
The seminar became more eventful with the active presence of Mr. Arjun S, an expert in assessing the vulnerability of various coastal hazards and shoreline changes, and the recipient of the young scientist award of 2010 instituted by the Kerala State Council for Science Technology & Environment, Govt. of Kerala.
